Anyone want a gas cooker?

Parkinson Cowan freestanding gas cooker with 4-ring hob, single oven, eye-level grill and battery ignition that actually works - free to anyone that can collect it from Nicholas Street on Thursday (any time) or Friday (morning) this week.

Just like this one that some random people are selling/reviewing online:

Man with a van?
Up and down the street, hungover students are being winkled out of their shared houses by their long-suffering parents.  On my way to the shop a few minutes ago I heard two unrelated instances of fathers despairing aloud to their offspring: "You said you'd packed!  This isn't packed!"  Bless.  I hope and intend that my parents won't have a similar experience on Thursday when they arrive to help me finish the packing (specifically the cupboard under the stairs, Where Dwell Monsters).  Must get back to it in a minute.

But first - recommendations for a man (two men I guess) with a van?  We'll have done the packing, but we need someone to move everything out of the house, take it across York, and put it into the new house.  We're only going two and a half miles, and our largest items are the sofa and our bed (which is actually two three-foot singles) so it could be a large van making one trip or a smaller one making two or more trips.

Rampaging apostrophes
From an NVQ External Verifier's report.  From the context it's talking about a range of assessors, not a range of assessors' locations, so not a single one of the apostrophes is correct.  Nobody but me cares.  [sniffle]

Visit consisted of verifying 22 out of 91 portfolios' for RPVD L2 and PCVD L2 covering range of assessors', IVs' and workplace locations'.

Busy day
Got up early despite raging hangover.  Got the car MOTd.  Bought carbohydrates; lured Greg out of bed with same.  Drove to Nottinghamshire.  Had a lovely visit with parental units and the chirpy old geezer (Gramps) while my beloved did arcane computery things in the parental office.  Drove home.

Oh yeah, and sold the house.

Sell or let?
We've just had an offer accepted on a house in Fulford, at a price that would allow us - just - to keep our current house off Lawrence Street and let it out rather than selling.

Does anyone have any advice about becoming landlords?

Can anyone recommend a good solicitor for conveyancing?  (Bonus points if they specialise in conveyancing for buy-to-let and let-to-buy.)

Knife sharpening
My kitchen knives are blunt as a blunt thing.  I have a Kitchen Devil Rollsharp sharpener, the kind that you draw the blade through, but the only thing it does it generate a tiny pile of grey dust on the countertop.  I have a steel, but I'm useless with it and the interwebs suggest that a steel is only useful for restoring the edge to an already sharp knife.  Googling and looking at local hardware store and key cutting places hasn't revealed any obvious sharpening services.

Can anyone recommend either a home knife sharpening tool that works, doesn't require a knack and costs less than about £25, or a sharpening service near York?

Humbug!
(With apologies to those who've already seen this message via email or Xbox Live.)

As many of you already know, and the rest of you are about to learn, I'm ambivalent about Christmas. I enjoy a week off work as much as the next middle manager, but I frankly find the whole cards, presents and festivities thing a bit wearing.

Once again, therefore, I haven't sent any Christmas cards myself (though I've been implicated on a number distributed by my own true love). This isn't only because I'm too lazy to bother; it's also so I can spend the money on other stuff, to whit...

As in previous years, for every card I would have sent (were I a less grouchy and more organised soul), and for each one received, after the Christmas holiday I'll donate £1 to my favourite charity, Our Celebration ((http://www.ourcelebration.org.uk/). Properly publicised, this habit ensures receipt of plenty of cards, which both makes me feel popular and enables me to decorate the living room without spending a penny on tinsel or paper chains; how cunning is that eh? More importantly, this year the donation to OC already comes to over £130, which I believe is money jolly well spent.

I've also bought you all a present - a sparkly new Xbox360 - and so y'all don't fight over it I've sent it to the kids at Alder Hey Children's Hospital to play with on your behalf (http://www.childsplaycharity.org/). As a dedicated console gamer on a mission to educate the next generation to understand the vital importance of obsessively checking every nook and cranny for that last Tomb Raider treasure, I believe this is also money well spent. Mwu-har-har.

My bah humbuggishness notwithstanding, I wish you all a very peaceful/exciting [delete as applicable] and above all happy season.

Is that an alien growing in your tummy, or are you just pleased to see me?
I went to the practice nurse on Wednesday to have my stitches out, but some of them were too ... ugh ... to remove.  I'm back there this afternoon to see if the antibiotics have done the trick and the rest can come out.  I'm also going ask about the hard and painful lump that seems to be growing in my stomach muscles (or where they'd be if I had any) ... OMG ... AAAAAALIEN!!!

My stitches are a bit infected and really rather sore.  The out-of-hours doctor has given me horse pills which will, it is to be hoped, do the trick.

I mean, what??
Greg lost his wedding ring on Monday. He looked everywhere, and then I searched all the same places properly. Twice. We got Dan and Caron to search their house in case he'd left it there at the weekend. We examined every inch of his work car park, both our cars, and the pavements and roads near our house. We searched every room of the house, including in and under all the furniture. I stripped the bed, emptied all his pockets and checked the washing machine drum.

He spent all week feeling embarrassed and sorry about it, probably not helped by me insisting that this meant he'd have to marry me again, only THIS time he'd have to dress as the Fat Controller and let Jane and Caron wear swords. We joked that as soon as we bought a new one, the old one would magically appear.

Yesterday we ordered a new ring. This morning his old one turned up.

In the bread bin.

A milestone reached
After not losing any weight for several weeks I've finally dropped the pound I needed to hit a milestone - 4 stone lost since February this year. Another 1 stone 4 to go before Operation Baby (IVF) can commence.

Dermot the Dermoid Cyst
Dermot the Dermoid Cyst and I will formally be ending our intimate relationship on Wednesday 3 December at a short* ceremony in the Gynaecology Unit at St James's Hospital in Leeds.

I'm seriously bricking it. I'm fearful about the general anaesthetic - relinquishing control, small risk of death, rather larger risk of nausea. I'm also very nervous about pain management afterwards - the ward sister told me to bring my own painkillers as the ones the hospital gives me won't be strong enough!

But. People have this surgery every day and they're okay, so I shall be too. Yes.

* I hope. If they have to bail out from laparoscopy into open surgery it'll take longer and the aftermath will be more horrible.

Photo meme thingy
I'm only doing this because I've just taken a snap of myself on holiday.

The rules:

- take a picture of yourself right now.
- don't change your clothes, don't fix your hair... just take a picture.
- post that picture with NO editing.
- post these instructions with your picture

I can't resize the pic to something LJ will accept as this little eepc, whilst otherwise an utter little darling, doesn't have an image editor, so instead here's a link:

HP OfficeJet Pro 1150C colour printer and scanner free to a good home. Nothing at all wrong with it; it’s just not compatible with Vista. Want rid of it by Friday 19th; can deliver in York.

Not at all the recommended method.
After 4 days of the Shitting Vomiting Awfuls (during which I lost 6 pounds, but it turned into a somewhat less startling 3 when I rehydrated) I now weigh 14 stone 6, making a total weight loss of 3 stone 12 since February.

I think I've earned some new clothes.
